Phthalylsulfathiazole is a poorly absorbed sulfonamide antibiotic that releases sulfathiazole in the intestinal lumen after hydrolysis by intestinal bacteria, exerting local antibacterial activity by inhibiting bacterial dihydropteroate synthase and folate synthesis. It was used for pre-operative bowel sterilization and treatment of intestinal infections, though it has been largely superseded by newer antibiotics.
