Serotonin antagonism combined with reuptake inhibition places trazodone in the SARI category, distinct from the SSRIs in its receptor profile. It blocks serotonin receptors while inhibiting the serotonin transporter, with comparatively little action on other neurotransmitter systems, and it also engages the histamine H1 receptor. That antihistaminic component produces the sedation for which the drug is extensively used off-label in insomnia, alongside its approved role in depression. Unlike many hypnotics it is generally not habit-forming, a property that shapes prescribing preferences.
