A hedgehog pathway inhibitor that blocks Smoothened, a protein involved in the abnormal cell signaling pathway that drives certain leukemias. It is approved in combination with low-dose cytarabine for treating newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia in adults who are not eligible for intensive chemotherapy. Blocking this pathway suppresses leukemia stem cell self-renewal.
