Protein Binding

Pharmacokinetics

The reversible binding of drugs to plasma proteins (primarily albumin and alpha-1-acid glycoprotein). Only unbound (free) drug is pharmacologically active and available for distribution and elimination.

Exemples

  • Warfarin 99% bound
  • Gentamicin <10% bound
  • Displacement interactions (phenytoin + valproate)
