Selectivity

Pharmacodynamics

The ability of a drug to preferentially act on a specific receptor subtype, tissue, or organ. Higher selectivity generally means fewer off-target effects. Expressed as the ratio of binding affinities.

Examples

  • Beta-1 selective: metoprolol, atenolol
  • COX-2 selective: celecoxib
  • SSRI selectivity for SERT
