A naturally occurring bile acid that dissolves cholesterol gallstones in patients who are poor surgical candidates, by reducing biliary cholesterol saturation. It is also approved for the treatment of cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis, a rare inborn error of bile acid synthesis.
