Receptor-level interruption of the renin-angiotensin system distinguishes valsartan from the ACE inhibitors: it blocks the angiotensin II type 1 receptor rather than the enzyme producing the hormone. Angiotensin II can therefore still be formed, but cannot constrict vascular smooth muscle, so vessels relax and blood pressure falls. Approved uses are hypertension, heart failure and improvement of survival after myocardial infarction. The class carries an absolute contraindication in pregnancy, since interference with the fetal renin-angiotensin system causes injury to the developing kidney. Its elimination half-life is about six hours. The compound belongs to the cardiovascular-system group, with formula C24H29N5O3 and a mass near 435.5 g/mol.

This angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) is used to treat high blood pressure, heart failure, and to improve survival after a heart attack. It works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a hormone that constricts blood vessels, allowing them to relax and lower blood pressure. Like all ARBs, it should not be taken during pregnancy.
