Succimer (DMSA, dimercaptosuccinic acid) is a water-soluble chelating agent used for the treatment of lead poisoning in children and adults, forming stable water-soluble complexes with heavy metals including lead, mercury, and arsenic that are excreted in urine. Unlike older chelators such as EDTA and BAL, succimer is orally bioavailable with lower toxicity and greater selectivity for lead over essential minerals. It is also used as a renal imaging agent (technetium-99m DMSA) for cortical scintigraphy.
